A Book Of Fugitive Poems [by Mary J. Tanner] [1880]

Mary Jane Tanner was an American aspiring poet from Utah who very much enjoyed writing and wrote articles for a number of publications. She served as a Relief Society president in Provo, Utah for twenty-two years. She died January 8, 1890, at the age of fifty-three. Despite feelings of inadequacy, the desire to see her poems in print was stronger and she achieved her lifelong dream when she published this collection of her poetry, A Book Of Fugitive Poems, in 1880

A poem in this volume titled “Such is Life” eloquently expresses Mary Jane’s valiant efforts to write amid the demands placed on her.

"Farewell, hopes of fame and fortune,
I must bid you all good bye;
While I go to boil potatoes,
And prepare the chicken pie."
